Nokia N97: I like the keyboard and the big screen, I love the widgets and Nokia's attempt at an app store. I love the capacity and the camera. However, it doesn't have a very exciting interface compared to the iPhone, no 3D acceleration, and the Exchange support is poor.
Apple iPhone 3G S: If I get an iPhone it will be on eBay from a country where the iPhones are sold unlocked, not jailbroken or otherwise molested. I hate the idea of locked phones and the Apple-AT&T relationship. But, DOOM on the iPhone may actually convince me to get the new iPhone, seriously. DOOM was (and still is!) an awesome game that I will never tire of. I remember DOOM costing $59 when it came out. The iPhone App Store is amazing, and since I do want to write my own apps someday, I'd have a huge marketplace to sell them, if I could just get some inspiration.... I wish that the iPhone had widgets, I am addicting to immediately seeing my calendar of events right on the main view of my N95. I am seriously stuck between the N97 and new iPhone, so much so, I will probably stay with my N95, since if I pick an iPhone or N97, I will just think about the other phone I didn't get, and my N95 is an amazing phone and I don't have the need to upgrade, I'm just feeling severely tempted.
HTC Magic: Android phones are cool and I love the idea of Google getting into the handset world. However, it doesn't look attractive enough to pull me from Nokia/Apple, however, with the Google Ion, they really got my attention! Google and HTC- keep up the great work and maybe I'll be a customer in time for LTE.
No Palm Pre! Why?
- I do not see Palm as being innovative. They follow the trend instead of setting one.
- I do not see Palm as having a serious product or being a serious company. I thought they were gone and wham! they have a phone.
- I don't do CDMA. GSM only here. I like SIM cards and I am a bit of a world traveler.
- The Palm Pre's apps are HTML+Javascript. Oh please, thats weak, compared to Java and/or a C-based language on the others.
- The Pre does not excite.
No Windows Mobile?
- No Windows for me
- Interface is ugly
- Probably requires a Windows-based computer for syncing and other interactions
- Windows is bad enough on a desktop/laptop, I don't want Windows in my pocket.
- I don't like what Microsoft stands for- not following standards, closed systems, expensive SDKs, etc
Update: 6 July 2009 I bought the Android Dev Phone 1 instead of one of the items listed here. I wanted to see the developer functionality for debugging, but its not like I've used a regular G1 so I could have something to compare it to. Overall, the phone is great. There is a free Exchange client, the touch screen is great as is the physical keyboard. However, my Mac reports that the phone has no Bluetooth services, so it seems the Dev Phone can't do anything other than use a Bluetooth hands-free device. No file push, no dial-up networking, nothing. Also, the T-Mobile 3G coverage seems decent, and iMeem streaming over 3G is nice!
